In the beginning of the book, "If I Stay", Mia and her family get into a terrible accident and Mia is rushed to the ICU. Mia is soon to find out that she is the only family member that survived the freak accident.
After going into a coma, Mia couldn't tell if she was dead or alive. She could see herself, but others couldn't, and people didn't seem to notice when she opened doors or moved any real-life objects. It was like she was invisible.
Her family often visited her in the hospital. Mia's grandparents and distant family would sit and talk to her still corpse for hours, and Mia's ghost-type form would listen, which was often boring.
With no one to talk to, Mia often found herself in deep thought. She wondered if she should just give up and die, of if she should wake up. She missed the way her life used to be before the accident. She missed her parents and little brother, and she missed playing the cello. She missed her boyfriend, who has yet to visit. Her life will never go back to the way it was before the accident.
In the waiting room, Mia's invisible form found her beloved punk-rock boyfriend. He was sitting and waiting for the right time to sneak into the room where Mia's body laid. He went through a lot of trouble, but somehow was able to reach his goal.
Adam, Mia's boyfriend, sat by her hospital bed and talked to her lifeless body for hours. He apologized for not coming sooner and mumbled on and on as if he believed she was truly listening, which she was. At the end of the book, Adam whispers, "Mia, wake up, I love you." Suddenly, Mia's eyes open.
