GMO stands for "Genetically Modified Organism" which is a result of genetic engineering. This means that we can alter the genes in the food's genome!
What is a genome?
A genome refers to an organisms complete set of DNA.
Oh, I think I get it! By adding and subtracting genes to the genome, we can alter our foods! But how do we do that?
Good Question! We are able to do that by a special technology called recombinant DNA technologies. I know it might sound confusing, but it is actually super cool!
By using recombinant DNA technology, we can join together different DNA molecule fragments from two or more different organisms. This combination can then be put into an organism to make it more nutritious or add herbicides to prevent foods from getting rotten faster!
