Hi, my name's Katie, and recently, my parents decided to uproot our family in humble Iowa and move to big-city LA. Obviously, I'm not too thrilled by the idea.
Why did we have to move? I liked Iowa.. And I don't know anyone here in LA. They probably won't like me.
Mom, I'm scared for school tomorrow. What if they make fun of my accent?
My mom tried to comfort me, but I was still scared. Middle school can be rough.
Aww, honey, don't worry about them!
My first day of school turned out to be worse than I imagined.
Hey, I'm the new girl in your math class. Can I eat lunch with you guys?
Uh, no. You say you're from Iowa? Ha! Bet you don't even have a phone.
They laughed at me! They were mean! I don't want to go to school! I'll never fit in if I don't have what they have, like cool clothes and fancy phones.
Truth was, I didn't have a phone. But, after Mom's deal, I felt a little better about going to school.
Aww, sweetie, it's ok. Tell you what, for being so great about moving, Dad and I will get you a phone. And, we can go shopping on Saturday. How's that?
The next week, I asked if I could hang out with the other girls. They said yes!
Hey, I'm Katie. Can I sit with you guys?
Yeah sure! Cute outfit, by the way. Very trendy.
And a cool phone! Is that the new one?
Now I fit in. I got new clothes, a new phone, and started to visit a speech therapist to get rid of my accent. Although I'll never be the same, I know that I'll be accepted here in LA.
