Hey there, welcome back to another session. Today I will give you some insight on what JPEG 2000 is and how it works.
To begin, JPEG 2000 is is an “ image compression standard and coding system.” Basically, it supports lossless and lossy compression in a single codestream. It also has a flexibility on the file format which makes it more better than the original JPEG because “ JPEG 2000 can compress images from 20 percent to 200 percent more than JPEG. “
JPEG 200 was created by the Joint Photo graphics Experts Group Committee in 2000. Originally they created JPEG but JPEG 2000 was more improved than the original version because there was more flexibility in the file format when compressing images. People still use it and it is still free.
JPEG 2000 uses both a lossy and loss less compression and it can be compressed up up 20 percent to 200 percent better than JPEG can which is pretty good.
- Picture quality is high with small degree of compression. – small file size.
Advantages of JPEG 2000.
– JPEG is less suitable for working with text or monochrome graphics with clear boundaries -every next step of compressing the image degrades its quality .
Disadvantages of JPEG 2000.
There are similar formats that are like JPEG which is the original JPEG itself and PNG. PNG deals with images and has a higher quality than JPEG 2000. However JPEG 2000 can load faster. JPEG 2000 is not famous and not used at all unless to save an image in Photoshop. That's usually the only time that it is useful. Other than that it is useless and not famous as compared to other formats. Some formats that are better and more useful than JPEG 2000 would be a PDF , Gif or PNG.
