Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States:  How did they oppose it?
  • I am so angry! this compromise will only do our country bad.
  • same, same. Slavery shall be abolished, but thats not going to happen if congress goes through with this compromise.
  • northern free states: Beliefs about congressional power
  • who else agrees that congress should have a total say in whether or not states should be a slave or a free state.
  • Yes, congress should always have a final say. We clearly know what happens when states have a final say.
  • Northern Free States: fears about the compromise
  • Ahhhh! I am really nervous that Missouri will become a free state, it will ruin our country.
  • Same, The southerners don't know what their talking about.
  • Northern free states opposed the compromise because they opposed slavery, and believed it would spread. They thought that the compromise would allow more new states to become slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: why did they support it
  • Hello everyone. We need room for new slave states, that is why me and my dear friend support this compromise.
  • yes yes. I believe that too.
  • The northern free states believed that it should be determined by the federal government. They felt that congress should have more power because if they didn't the states would eventually have more power and that's not good for the country.
  • Southern Free States: Beliefs about states rights
  • northern free states feared that, with this compromise, would come more slaves. Once Missouri would become a state, it would have to decide for itself whether or not it will be a slave or free state. Northerners were scared to take that risk of it being a slave state.
  • Southern Free States: Fears about the Compromise
  • I know the compromise is a good thing, but what if states choose to be free states. Couldn't that end slavery.
  • wow you are certainly correct, but we will have hope.
  • Southern slave states supported the compromise because it gave room for new slave states.
  • Southerners believed that new states should decide whether or not they should be a slave or free state. They believed that congress was mostly on northerners side, so it was only fair for states to decide for themselves.
  • We believe states should have power, and decide for themselves.
  •    Although they loved the idea of states deciding for themselves whether or not they should be a free or slave state, there was also always a risk. If states decided to be a free state, it would make it unbalanced and could be the beginning of abolishing slavery, which they never wanted.
