The narrator starts out by telling us that he is not "mad" but disease has plagued his brain and all he can think about is killing his neighbor because of his vulture eye,
The narrator then explains how he started stalking the old man every night at midnight for a week.
Then, on the 8th night, the old man awoke and cried out "whos there" but he did not see the narrator due to the darkness of the room.
Then, the narrator accidentally shines the lantern on the man and it becomes too much for him to look at due to his fear of the eye so he kills the old man by suffocating him in his bed.
The narrator then dismembers the old man's body and hides him underneath
At 4 in the morning, the narrator heard a knock at the door. He opened it, and there was a police officer who wanted to ask him some questions because the neighbors heard some noises. During the interview, the narrator lost his mind and told the officer where the body was.
