When people first came to America they settled in colonies. A colony is a group of people who inhabit new land, but are still tied with their homeland.
The British government taxed the colonists because they owed money and needed to get it somehow.
The colonists thought it was unfair and they were angry. They started to boycott British goods and smuggle them.
The colonists said, "No taxation without representation."
The phrase "No taxation without representation" meant that the colonists shouldn't be taxed if they don't have a representative in Parliament.
The Boston Massacre was when a colonist yelled at a British officer. Pretty soon a crowd gathered, 10 people were shot, 5 of them died. This happened as a protest against taxes.
The Boston Tea Party was when colonists disguised themselves as Mowhak Indians and threwtea from 3 ships into Boston Harbor. They did this because they didn't want to pay the tea tax.
The British were fed up with the colonists and their actions.
However, neither side really wanted war.
The war between the colonies and Britain happened because colonists were tired of being over taxed and they were angry that they didn't have a representative in Parliament.
