Storyboard Text

  • When people first came to America they settled in colonies. A colony is a group of people who inhabit new land, but are still tied with their homeland.
  • The British government taxed the colonists because they owed money and needed to get it somehow.
  • The colonists thought it was unfair and they were angry. They started to boycott British goods and smuggle them.
  • The colonists said, "No taxation without representation."
  • The phrase "No taxation without representation" meant that the colonists shouldn't be taxed if they don't have a representative in Parliament.
  • The Boston Massacre was when a colonist yelled at a British officer. Pretty soon a crowd gathered, 10 people were shot, 5 of them died.  This happened as a protest against taxes.
  • The Boston Tea Party was when colonists disguised themselves as Mowhak Indians and threwtea from 3 ships into Boston Harbor. They did this because they didn't want to pay the tea tax.
  • The British were fed up with the colonists and their actions.
  • However, neither side really wanted war.
  • The war between the colonies and Britain happened because colonists were tired of being over taxed and they were angry that they didn't have a representative in Parliament.
