  • Theodor Schwann was a physician who, under studying animals, realized they were all composed of cells.

  • CELL DIVISION
  • Matthais Schleiden, a botanist, had discovered that all plants are composed of cells as well.
  • Both Schwann and Schleiden's discoveries fit together perfectly in the concept of cells being the basic unit of structure and function in living and nonliving things.
  • Rudolph Virchow, another physician, was the first to observe cells dividing, proving cells come from preexisting cells. All of these men and more largely contributed towards the great cell theory.
