  •  Causes of the Persian War
  • Battle of Marathon
  • The Battle of Thermopylea
  • The Ionian Greeks asked the mainland Greeks for help. King Darius I was furious with the Athenians that they helped the Ionians rebel against Persia, and declared war.
  • The Battle of Salamis
  • The Battle of Marathon occured in 490 B.C.E.  Athens had won because of their Phalanx formation strategy. They knew to have a strategy because Pheidippides warned them that the Persians were coming.
  • The Battle of Platea
  • This attack occured in 480 B.C.E. Xerxes leads his army into them. Leonides (spartan) tries to hold them off but all 300 died.
  • The Aftermath of the War
  • This battle occured right after The Battle of 300, so it occured in 480 B.C.E. The Athenians send a message saying they forfeit, making the spartans go into a narrow waterway, and fought them there. They succeeded. 
  • This battle occured in 479 B.C.E. The greeks defeated the Persians that were left behind to fight. This was the end of the war.
  • After the war, Athens created the Delian League. An alliance with other city states to protect themselves if Persia ever again invaded. Athens rebuilt and experienced its Golden Age.
