The first group on the Period Table of Elements is the Alkali Metals. These elements only have ONE valence electron, making them VERY reactive. These elements are very soft, so soft in fact that they can be cut with a knife. They are not as dense as some of the other elements. It's oxidation number, is 1+.
The Alkaline Earth Metals are group number two on the table. These elements have two valence electrons and consist mostly of metals. (Helium has two valence electrons but helps feed the octet rule, since it has a full valence shell). The elements oxidation number is 2+.
