In 1880 a young lady named Madame Loisel thought she was poor even though she was very privileged. One night Madame's husband brought her a invitation home to an invitation to a high class party.
When she received that invitation she burst out in tears because she didn't have a dress that was expensive enough. Her husband then gave her 400 francs to buy a dress.
Madame then goes and buys a dress worth 400 francs and then realizes she needs jewelry. Then she goes to her friend and asks to borrow jewelry. She borrows what she thinks is the most expensive diamond necklace and goes to the party.
While Madame was at the party she had a lot of fun and stayed till 4:00 in the morning. When it was time to go they found a carriage and went home. When they got home madame felt her neck and the necklace was gone.
Madame was to scared to tell her friend so she searched trying to find it but after a week gave up. She decided she would have to buy a new one. They found a necklace like the one she lost that was 36000 frances and took out loans to buy it.
Madame then gives the necklace back and goes on to pay her debt. Ten years later she walks by her friend after her debt is paid off and decides that she should tell her friend what happened. She then told her friend and madame finds out that the necklace was fake.
