  • George Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789 in New York City. The first thing that Washington and congress did was put a working government in place.
  • Whiskey Rebellion
  • The government was in about $50,000,000 of debt and most of it was in the form of bonds which had interest.
  • Problems in NW Territory
  • Alexander Hamilton came up with a brilliant idea to get the government out of debt. His plan was to pay off state debt first, then create a national bank for the government to keep their money, and finally to increase tariffs.
  •  French Revolution
  • The government put a tax on making whiskey, so many farmers got mad and started protests. A militia was sent by Washington to show armed rebellions would not be tolerated in a republic.
  • The U.S. government tried to buy Native American lands and they refused to sell. Washington decided to attack the Natives and eventually the Treaty of Greenville was made where the Natives gave up most of modern day Ohio. 
  • Starting in April of 1789, the French revolution focused on destroying the unfair class system. As the war continued it got much more violent.
