"The Fiddle" Alan Silitoe, 1930 Jacob Watts Second period 5-1-18
Jeff Bignal was a young man who has no wife and who's father was killed. He now lives with his mom by Harrisons row. He was short and chubby.
The story is set in the Coal Mining industry in the 1930's.Things were hard economically in Britain around this time. By the 20th century things were getting better.
Jeff was mad because he forgot his fiddle and hated not having it with him. He was taking all of that aggression out on others including his mother. For example he tells her "I'd do anything"
Jeff was 26 when the second war began. He never really started a life other than in the military, but people still thought he turned out well. Jeff even sold and learned to live without his fiddle.
The theme of "The Fiddle" is to escape some things in life. That's what Jeff used the fiddle for. He was so worried about it because he got used to using it as a crutch. So in life you shouldn't lean on things to get you through hard times.
