For the next year, Robespierre governed France as a dictator, and the period of his rule became known as the Reign of Terror. The Committee of Public Safety’s main goal was to protect the Revolution from its enemies. Under Robespierre, the committee often had these “enemies” tried in the morning and guillotined in the afternoon. Over 40,000 people were killed. The reign of Terror ended when the Government turned on Robespierre.

Napoleon quickly took the title of first consul and assumed the powers of a dictator. He first got the economy on a solid footing. Napoleon set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system. Napoleon also took steps to end corruption and inefficiency in government. He fired corrupt officials and set up public schools.

  • After his defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813, Napoleon retreated to Paris where (due to a lack of support from his military marshals) he was forced to renounce his throne in April 1814. The European powers exiled him to the island of Elba in the Mediterranean. Within eleven months, however, Napoleon was back on the European continent at the head of a army intent on restoring Napoleon to the throne of France. Napoleon's defeat came in June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo. This time, the European powers were not going to take any chances on Napoleon's possible return. They exiled him to the island of St. Helena island located in the South Atlantic Ocean. This time he sadly died there. The Napoleonic wars did have a large impact on industrialization in Britain, the United States and Europe as a result of realizations and actions taken to better their countries after the Napoleonic wars.
