  • What did Joseph do?
  • He was also the first person to build the London's first sewers which is still in use today!
  • He became a civil engineer in the 19th century.
  • What did Joseph Bazalgette discover?
  • He creating the sewers in London helped to wiped out cholera (type of disease) in the capital.
  • He also design the Albert, Victoria and Chelsea embankments, which housed the sewers, in central London.
  • When did Joseph Bazalgette finish the sewers?
  • In 1878, Bazalgette's sewers were finally finished, the worst disaster in the history of the River Thames took place.
  • Why was bazalgette important?
  • Without Joseph, the the contribution to the health of Victorians Londoners wouldn't been possible.
  • And it's because of him that cholera, along with other diseases such as typhoid, are now part of British history.
  • It is because of his work that the Thames is now the cleanest metropolitan river in the world.
