  • Where It All Began
  • Need For a School
  • We agree!
  • We need a school for the deaf.
  • Meeting Sicard
  • It all started in 1817 when clergyman Gallaudet met Dr. Cogswell and his deaf daughter, Alice. He met them in New England. Cogswell wanted his daughter and all the deaf people in America to have the same quality education as hearing people.
  • Learning Methods to Teach
  • You should come to my next lecture.
  • Gallaudet, Cogswell, and ten other America citizens saw the country's desperate need for a school for the deaf. In a single afternoon they raised enough money to send Gallaudet to London to learn about how to teach the deaf.
  • Opening the First School for the Deaf
  • In London Gallaudet met Abbe Sicard. who was the director of the French Institute for the Deaf in Paris, along with his two deaf assistants, Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc. They were there teaching the methods they used for educating the deaf in France.
  • Influence on American Sign Language
  • Gallaudet decided to go to one of their lectures. He met with Siccard and his assistants . They invited him to join their teacher preparation program  in the French school. Clerc and Gallaudet worked closely together, but because of Gallaudet's limited time and funds he couldn't master the language.
  • I'd love to come.
  • Because of the circumstances Clerc came back to America with Gallaudet. On the 55 day trip back Gallaudet taught Clerc English while Clerc taught him more sign language. When they finally got back to New England they opened the first American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Americas first school for the deaf is now open!!
  • One of the schools most significant influences on ASL is that it paved the way for more deaf people to become accepted in society by becoming educated properly. The school also helped more schools for the deaf to open.
  • Americas 100th school for the deaf!!
