  • James Burke was born in London to poor parents, both of whom died when he was young.
  • Childhood
  • At age 16, Burke was taught how to fight by Joe Parrish, owner of the "Spotted Dog" bar. He got into his first real fight at age 18, which lasted 50 rounds.
  • Mentor
  • One day, Burke saw a burning house and immediately rushed in to see if he could help. He entered multiple times, saving a woman and 4 children.

  • In 1828, Burke fought against William Fitzmaurice for 106 rounds.
  • Fighting Record
  • When Irish champion Simon Byrne died 3 days after a fight against Burke, he was charged with murder, but was acquitted July 11, 1833.
  • Accused
  • Burke brought prize-fighting to America after defeating Samuel O'Rourke. Although he won the fight, Burke was forced to flee the arena without his prize money after being mobbed by O'Rourke's friends.
