  • You don't make curry any more, the way you did for Alec, the way Vera tought you.
  • He has gone to where Grandma has gone.
  • The pond in our park was circular, exposed, perhaps fifty yards across. when the wind blew, little waves travelled across it and slapped the paved edges, like a miniature sea. we would go there, mother, grandfathet and I, to sail the motor-launch Grandfather and I made out of plywood. It usually sailed across with no issues until mother met ralph. It sank.
  • purissic acid, not for drinking.
  • what's that?
  • Grandfather looked at him. 'leave her alone? what do you know about being left alone?' Then Grandfather glanced from Ralph to Mother. And Ralph didn't answer, but his face went tight and his hands clenched on his knife and fork.
  • my fathers death came soon after grandmas death. He was required now and then to fly to Dublin or Cork in the light aeroplane belonging to the company he woked for, which imported Irish goods. One day, in unexceptional weather conditions, the aircraft disappeared without trace into the Irish sea.
  • After what Ralph said Grandfather took his to the shed. I wandered in after him. He poured a little nitric acid into a beaker, then took another jar of colourless liquid and added it to the nitric acid. He stired the liquid with a glass rod and heated it gently. brown fumes came off. He looked enchanted by his work.
  • I thought I would throw acid in Ralphs face at breakfast. I did'n want to kill him. It would have been pointless to kill him- since death is a deceptive business. I wanted to spoil his face so Mother would no longer want him.  I took the spice jar to my room and hid it in my bedside draw. I would smuggle it down to breakfast and splash it on his face at the perfect time.
  •  I could hear the ambulance radio from my room that night. i peered down to the landing it was parked with the doors open and a gurney inside the wind blew through and blew a corner of the cover off the gurney it was grandfather. Mother said he drank something he shouldn't have but she was very drunk that evening so anything could have happened.
