Storyboard Text

  • After the death of Oedipus, Polynices and Eterocles battle for power of Thebes. They kill each other in the fight, so Creon becomes king of Thebes.
  • Antigone
  • "I could never stand by silent, watching destruction march against our city, putting safety to rot, nor could I ever make that man a friend of mine who menaces our country" (lines 207-210).

  • As king of Thebes, Creon issues a decree stating that no one shall bury Polynices because he is a traitor.
  • Antigone buried her brother, Polynices, despite Creon's decree that forbid her from doing that.
  • "These laws--I was not about to break them, not out of fear of some man's wounded pride, and face the retribution of the gods" (lines 509-511).
  • "I'm not about to prove myself a liar, not to my people, no, I'm go into kill her!" (lines 733-744)
  • After Antigone is sentenced to death, Haemon, who is Creon's son and also betrothed to Antigone, tries to talk some reason into Creon.
  • "That man in the street, you know, dreads your glance... but it's for me to catch the murmurs in the dark, the way this city mourns for this girl" (lines 763-776).
  • As Antigone approaches her death, she contemplates her decisions and what life would be like for others after her death.
  • "No one to weep for me, my friends, no wedding-song... No tears for the destiny that's mine, no loved ones to mourn my death" (lines 963-969).
  • Creon has a change of heart, and he decides to free Antigone from the vault. When he gets there, he discovers that he is too late after he finds Antigone's body. Haemon stabs himself.
  • "I killed you, I, God help me, I admit it all!" (lines 1443-1444).
