Lizabeth and the kids insult Miss Lottie and destroy some of her marigolds. Lizabeth feels bad after the event with the approaching adulthood feeling that it wasn't all fun anymore like it used to be, and instead it was mean and hateful.
Lizabeth hears her parents in the other room talking about how they are poor and how her dad can't find a job which makes her cry. This shows her how hard life is and makes her feel more like an adult because of the reality of poverty. all of the emotions start to make a storm inside of her.
Lizabeth wakes up her brothers and brings him to Miss Lotties house where she releases the storm on all of the marigolds by tearing them all out of the grounds. This is where she makes her full transformation into adulthood by seeing that the marigolds were all Mrs.Lottie had in the dark world during The Great Depression.
