ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary
this explains that it was night and he wasn't very happy while he was thinking.
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
The bird that flew in made his emotion turn from sadness to happiness.
But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour
the raven was only able to speak one word, nevermore. except for his first word, lenore.
this means that he doesn't know if the raven was sent to be a prophet of the devil or if he is just a bird prophet.
“Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!
his soul shall not be lifted from him and he's referring to his soul in his shadow.
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted—nevermore!
this poem's theme is about the descent into insanity. It carefully tracks the steps from a state of nervousness to total psychological breakdown.
