After their controversial confrontation, Daisy and Gatsby leave in the yellow car while Tom, Jordan, and Nick get off to a later start behind them towards East Egg.
You two start on home, Daisy. In Mr. Gatsby's car.
While driving through the Valley of Ashes, Daisy sees a woman coming out in the middle of the road. Without enough time to think, she runs the car into Myrtle Wilson which results in her tragic death. Gatsby then proceeds to take the wheel and they drove off in panic without stopping.
Stop the car! Tom- it's me!
Tom pulls up to the scene and learns of Myrtle's death. While Tom was in Wilson's shop, a witness describes the car that hit Myrtle as being the one that Tom owns. Wilson aggressively confronts Tom, and Tom consoles him and explains that he wasn't driving it. They leave shortly after that.
That yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine-- do you hear?
Disturbed by the tragic day, Nick refuses to go inside Tom's house after they return back. Tom offers to call a taxi and Nick accepts. Once Jordan and Tom go inside, Nick is greeted by a Gatsby who is hiding outside the house in order to make sure Daisy is safe from Tom.
Won't you come in, Nick?
No, thanks. But I'd be glad if you'd order me a taxi. I'll wait outside.
Gatsby explains to Nick what truly happened when Myrtle was hit by their car. Nick realizes Gatsby's concern for Daisy in regards to Tom and offers to check to see if there is any commotion.
Yes, but of course I'll say I was. I'm just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her.
Was Daisy driving?
To Nick's disbelief, Daisy and Tom could be seen through the window talking in agreement. Tom was holding Daisy's hand and looking at her earnestly as if they were conspiring together.
