"I don't think that we can fight any longer"
"Keep fighting Confederates. We can finish them off"
General Lee was surprised by the sneak attack that General Hooker made on him and his Confederate forces on July 1, 1863. As the Union soldiers re-grouped in Cemetery Ridge, the Confederates had no information on the Union army, but still managed to have time to get into a defense line. The Confederates pushed the Union through the town and the war would continue the next day.
"I guess this means we won..."
July 2, 1863 was the second day of the battle. The Union had most of the power and were located at Little round top. The battle had lasted until nightfall when Lee was forced to pull back. Lees troops managed to take some trenches, but many died in the bloody battle.
"And I thank thee brave soldiers who fought for our country in the American Civil War"
July 3, 1863, the Union began to slack off. The Confederates fired for nearly an hour with faith and hope. With the Union soldiers, barely hurt, still fought even after Lee had planned to invade the center of the Union line. At the end of the battle, there were7,500 Confederate deaths. With one advantage for the Union, they had taken over Little Round Top and had started their defense line there.
The battle was a Union Victory! It was a turning point in the Civil War. Lees troops promised to never launch any attacks of the North side again. The South stopped searching for foreign aid after Britain decided not to give them any. The cotton diplomacy failed and there were 23,00 casualties for the Union.
After the battle of Gettysburg, President Lincoln gave a speech called the Gettysburg Address. In his speech, he praised the Unio soldiers bravery and had renewed his commitment to winning the Civil War. It was a short speech that only lasted two minutes long but was one of the most famous speeches in the U.S.
