  • invention of the wheel 5000 years ago changed the way people travel. coaches drawn by horses were used. this increased the speed oftravel to twenty kilometres per hour from a mere 7-8 kilometres per hour.wheeled carts allowed heavy loads to be transported over longer distances
  • humans had a need to cross the ocean . at this point canoe like boats were used for fishing but weren't affective in the ocean. the Egyptians were the first to build wooden boats to sail on the ocean. the vikings made boats with sails as well as 60 oarsmen to row. later ships were fitted with propellers powered by steam.these were succeeded by diesel powered ships .
  • railways were invented to transport large amounts of heavy goods. when wheels roll in the grooves on the rail it required less energy. ran faster due to less friction. became suitable for carrying goods and over time people as well. invention of the steam engine was developed by Thomas Newcomen in 1781. James watt created a steam engine that produce a continuous rotative motion . concept was applied to locomotives where steam produced from water and coal fuelled the engine
  • 1886 a German inventor Karl Benz came up with idea of motor run wagons. event is known as the birth of the modern auto mobile. in 1900s first commercial car the model T Ford was made in America. was cheap as it had been mass produced. could reach speeds of 64-72 km an hour
  • air transportation began with hot air balloons designed by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783. flights were limited as it could only travel down wind. concept of the modern airplane was only set fourth in 1799by Sir George Cayley. first assisted take off- December 17 1903 by the wright brothers who are known to be the first to fly in a powered and controlled aircraft.
  • Cold War between USA and Soviet Russia gave rise through the space. two powers used platform to display dominance. soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space on April 12 1961. Alan Shepard became the first American in space on May 5 1961. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon. today there are programmes hoping to make it to the red planet by 2024
