Storyboard Text

  • In 1854 several Americans began migrating to Kansas. Kansas along with Nebraska wanted admission into the Union. 
  • The debate on slavery in Nebraska and Kansas began. Nebraska did not want to be slave state, and Kansas did. Kansas has two governments in 1856. 
  • The debate on slavery continues. Kansas is split because of this. 
  • Charles Sumner who is part of the Senate gives a speech in 1856 to the senate called the ¨Crime Against Kansas¨ which highlighted his views of abolishing slavery in the United States.
  • Preston Brooks who is also part of the senate. Is angered by the speech. 
  • Brooks begins to beat Sumner with his cane, Sumner was close to death. This illustrates how the debate over slavery brought violence and affected the Senate. This brought slavery to a national stage and was a cause to the abolishment of slavery.
