Fortunados jester costume symbolizes his foolishness and senselessness.
When Montresor says “And I [drink] to your long life." This is ironic because Montresor is plotting to kill Fortunado.
When Montresor pulls out his trowel from his roquelaure, foreshadows that he will use it later in the story.
The tone of the story is very eerie and daunting. The story takes place in the dark and damp catacombs underneath Montresor's home.
Throughout most of the story the reader knows Fortunado is going to die, but Fortunado does not.
"I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunado, bowed him through several suits of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long a winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he follows. We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresor's."
