The setting is the Carnival in Italy. Montresor had "received" a pipe of Amontillado and had his doubts. He was going to go ask Luchessi about it. But Fortunato thought Luchessi could not tell the difference between a sherry and a Amontillado. So then Montresor took Fortunato to see the Amontillado.
Montresor is warning Forunato about the severe cold and how the vaults are insufferably damp. But Fortunato insists on seeing the Amontillado. He says "The cold is merely nothing."
As they are walking through the vault Fortunato begins coughing very heavily. Montresor tells Fortunato his health is precious and that he is well respected and should come back another time. But Fortunato insisted again that they continue. Montresor then presented a wine to Fortunato to drink along the way. Fortunato got drunk from the wine. Then Fortunato asked Montresor if he was apart of the brotherhood of masons and Montresor replied yes yes showing him his trowel.
Soon after Fortunato and Montresor arrived at a deep crypt and moved toward the remote end. Then Montresor led Fortunato into a small area where he quickly chained Fortunato to the wall to where he was not able to move. Fortunato did not understand what was going on because he was drunk. Montresor then told Fortunato " I must positively leave you. " Fortunato asked about where the Amontillado was and Montresor listened but did not answer.
Montresor quickly began building a wall using building stone, mortar, and his trowel. As he finished the first level of the wall Montresor realized that Fortunato was not intoxicated anymore. He quickly built the second, third, and fourth levels while hearing the chains move around. He built the wall up to breast height and then Fortunato started screaming. Montresor trembled and didn't know what to do at first then he screamed back to overcome Fortunato's scream.
It was now midnight and Montresor was finishing building the ninth, tenth, and eleventh levels. He came to the point where there was only one stone spot to fill. He placed it in its destined place and Fortunato started laughing. He called Fortunato's name several times and heard no answer. Montresor picked up the torch turned and made his was out and left Fortunato to Rest In Peace.
