  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • Missouri will upset the slave state to free state balance! 
  • Lets just get rid of slavery once and for all!
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power?
  • Only the federal government should be able to decide the fate of slavery
  • It is their job after all!
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the compromise
  • Slavery should not be allowed to continue on!
  • The 36/30 line will let too many slave states be created!
  • Abolitionist settlement was growing in the North. They also did not want to upset the slave state to free state balance.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support
  • Don't worry, we will make sure Kansas is a slave state!
  • If they choose to be free, lets just secede!
  • The north believed that only the federal government should be able to decide the fate of slavery
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states rights
  • States should be able to nullify federal laws they feel to be unconstitutional!

  • The north believed that the compromise would still allow too many new slave states to be created. They also thought that more slave states would be created above the line later on if no extra effort was made.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • We do not want regulation! Congress will just pass more laws until slavery will be abolished!
  • They expected Kansas to be settled in large part by slaveholders from Missouri who would vote to keep slavery legal. If states choose to be free, the South planned to secede from the U.S. 
  • Argued that states could nullify federal laws that they considered unconstitutional.  Senator Calhoun said the only way to save the Union was to protect slavery.
  • Feared that if Congress passed this one act, they would want to pass more and more and eventually they would want to abolish slavery! They didn't want regulation on slavery.
