Storyboard Text

  • As babies, Romulus and Remus were found by a She-wolf by the River Tibernus, who took care of them for a while. Later, they were taken in and raised by a Shepherd and his wife.
  • I want to found our new city on Palatine Hill.
  • As young adults, Remus and Romulus declined the offer of the Alba Longa crown to found their own city. However, they argued over where to found it, so they used augury, a type of prophecy using birds, to determine which place the gods wished for the city to go.
  • Well, I want to found it on Aventine Hill!
  • After further disagreement after using augury about the founding place for the new city, Romulus began to build walls and structures around Palatine Hill. Remus, being daring, continually made fun of Romulus’s doings. Angered by this, Romulus killed his brother.
  • Romulus named his new city Roma, or Rome, and he put into place a government with senators and patricians. As popularity of Rome grew, so did its population. However, much of Rome was men, so women were abducted from neighboring cities. Rome won a few wars, and eventually Romulus joined forces with Tatius for 5 years.
  • For 20 years following his short rule alongside Tatius, Rome was prosperous, Romulus ruled by himself, and wanted to expand his city’s land through battle.
  • Romulus disappeared and was presumed dead in 717 BCE, although many have different ideas of exactly how he died.
