  • On June 27th, in a small village of roughly 300 people, the anual lottery begins. This lottery isn't your typical jackpot lottery, it is where the head of the family comes up and draws a slip of paper out of the black box. On one of the slips of paper has a black dot that decides the family members that choose out of the black box to see who dies.

  • Every year before the lottery Mr. Summers or the mayor gives a speech and instructions to the heads of the family. Then he calls up the head of each family to choose from the black box.
  • Falling Action
  • While Mr. Summers is giving his speech and the instructions, the children go around the village and choose the roundest and smoothest rocks and then gives them to Mrs. Dunbar.
  • Resolution
  • After every head of the family has chosen, they all open up the slips of paper, and this year Mr. Hutchinson got the slip of paper with the pencil mark. Mrs. Hutchinson and their two children went up and drew from the box to see who would die. Mrs. Hutchinson picks the paper with the black dot and is hit in the head with a stone so big that it takes Mrs. Dunbar two hands to pick up.
