Orders from the President
The Lewis and Clark Expedition began in 1803 with the purpose to explore a new territory. President Thomas Jefferson had purchased all of the the Louisiana Territory from Napolean of France for 15 million dollars. This purchase doubled the size of the US (828,800 square miles).The expedition was led by Captain Meriwether Lewis, President Thomas Jefferson's personal secretary, and co-led by William Clark, who was an old army friend of Lewis.
