  • Summary
  • In act 1 takes place in the house of Reverend Parris`s. The act is based on Betty and Ruth being sick because of an unknown illness.  Well that is  what they believe until Parris pointed that he had seen the girls dancing and and drinking blood, that he had even seen one girl running around naked. In that time it was not appropriate for anyone to be in the woods specially not dancing and looking crazy. When the adults leave the room the girls  Abigail and  Mercy  start to talk about the illness of Betty but than Betty wakes up because she was pretending to be sick. Betty and Ruth pretend to be sick because they dont want to be in trouble because of there love chants.  They will than start pointing fingers to other innocent people so that they are not questioned.
  • John Proctor
  • " I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion when ever I come near! Or did I dream that? It’s she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!"
  • "Abby, that’s a wild thing to say"
  • Abigail
  •  "Uncle, we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it—and I’ll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speakin’ of witchcraft. Betty’s not witched."
  • John Proctor has no interest in Abby. They had in affair before but it was all gone.  Proctor has  not given any signs to Abby that he  loves her. In fact when he would see her he may have seen as blushing but he would look like that because he would be reminded of his mistake. John and Abby are both stubborn. John is a stuck up man who claims to not want Abby but they did have a thing in the past. Abby is to straightforward she fights for what she wants until she gets it.
  • Abigail continues to lie about the witchcraft that was performed on Betty. She tells her uncle that whatever he saw was just a dance that they usually do to have fun. Her uncle does not want to hear it though, it is convenient to not hear of it in his household.  From this event lies begin to be formed and false accusations are told. In this scene Abigail was scary , whenever confronted she would lash out. She did not want the truth to come out by any of the girls who were in the woods.
