  • The Pacemaker
  • In the 1950's Wilson Greatbatch, an American electrical engineer, invented the first implantable cardiac pacemaker
  • The pacemaker
  • He was building an oscillator to record heart sounds when he pulled the wrong resistor out of the box
  • When he assembled his device, it began to give off a rhythmic electric pulse
  • It was when he realized his invention could be used as a pacemaker
  • He spent two years refining his device and was awarded a patent for world's first implantable pacemaker
  • This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. Pacemakers are used to treat arrhythmias (problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat)
