In the 1950's Wilson Greatbatch, an American electrical engineer, invented the first implantable cardiac pacemaker
He was building an oscillator to record heart sounds when he pulled the wrong resistor out of the box
When he assembled his device, it began to give off a rhythmic electric pulse
It was when he realized his invention could be used as a pacemaker
He spent two years refining his device and was awarded a patent for world's first implantable pacemaker
This device uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. Pacemakers are used to treat arrhythmias (problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat)
