Storyboard Text

  • Japan had made it very clear that they are isolating themselves from the rest of the world and any new religion, culture, etc. that will even try to leave or enter Japanese grounds will face major consequences. The Act of Seclusion (1636), Japan was effectively cut off from Western nations for the next 200 years, took place.

  • The Neo-Confucian theory that dominated Japan during the Tokugawa Period recognized only four social classes–warriors (samurai), artisans, farmers and merchants.
  • we became bureaucrats or took up trade while being expected to maintain our warrior pride and military preparedness....so u have nothing to complain about.
  • They rely on us in order to ensure consistent income for landowning authorities.

  • In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry of the US Navy, arrived with a fleet of “black ships” and demanded the opening of the country. Seeing no other option, in 1854 the shogunate’s leaders agreed to the Japan-US Treaty of Peace and Amity, which opened the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to US ships.
  • we have no power or any supplies to fight tight now, so i guess we will have to alliance with the US.
  • we have come to take over!
  • Clothing, food, and customs dramatically changed. For example, the soldiers got new outfits made of steel and did things such as not taking their shoes off before entering a house etc. More noticeable were the changes in hairstyles with the short cut replacing the topknot, so that by 1890 it was difficult to find a man in the cities with a traditional hair style. For women, blackened teeth and shaved eyebrows began to disappear quickly from the cities and more slowly in the countryside.
  • I love these new clothes! the style is amazing!!
  • I know right?! The western countries really know style!
