Caitlin, a 12 year old girl, had a class assignment to pick a country she wanted to learn more about through a pen pal who would be from the country she chose, which came to be Zimbabwe.
When Caitlin came home that day she started working on her first letter to this mystery person that was half way around the globe.
Martin, a 14 year old boy, lives in Zimbabwe with his mom, dad, and 3 siblings. As a result of his hard work in school he is able to receive a letter from America. He receives Caitlin's letter, he writes back to her the same day he gets it. Both Caitlin and Martin promise each other to always write back although this promise starts to become hard for Martin to keep.
Martin and his family have struggled financially because of low paying jobs and the scarce amount of open slots for work. Consequently, Martin didn't have money for stamps and his education. At home conditions were very bad, Martin and his siblings slept under a bed and food and water wasn't seen on the regular. Many children would starve to death in these circumstances.
Martin didn't want to worry Caitlin although it came to a time when he had to tell her the truth. Caitlin became very worried and started to send him her baby sitting money which consisted of $20, Martin was able to give his family a month supply of food with that amount of money. Caitlin at first didn't tell her parents but after a few months she told them about the issue.
Caitlin's parents helped out Martin and his family by sending them clothing and Martin was able to go back to school thanks to Caitlin's moms research on Zimbabwe and ways to send money over so that it doesn't go into the wrong hands.
