Storyboard Text

  • The Northern economy was based on many industries. Some of those industries were mining, lumber, furs, textiles, and shipping.
  • In the North they didn't rely on slaves. People got jobs and did the work themselves.
  • We all have jobs and earn money for our families
  • Even though slaves were now free it was still hard to find a job. They were still treated terribly.
  • Even though I am free I am still treated like a slave.
  • The Southern economy was based on agriculture since the climate there was hot and humid. They relied on cash crops like rice, cotton, sugar cane, idigo, and tobacco.
  • We grow crops and sell them for money. They're called cash crops
  • Slaves usually worked in the fields with other slave and sometimes with other white farmers.
  • There was 12 million people in the South, one third of which were slaves
  • We represent two thirds of the Southern population
  • I represent the one third of African Americans in the South
