IN the beginning of the story the main character, Hannah, is on her way to her grandparents house for passover. When she gets there they have the dinner and Hannah drinks watered down wine. But this still makes Hannah feel sick and when it is time to offer something to the Prophet Elijah she dumps her whole glass in. By doing this her family offers her to open up the door for the profit. When she opens the door she is transported into this empty field right by a house.
There are many important rules to surviving at this camp.
When Hannah gets to the house she finds out that her name is Chaya, the people that live there are named Shmuel and Gitl, and that Shmuel is to be married in the morning. When Hannah wakes up she gets dressed for the wedding in a blue sailor suit dress. When they get to the place they are to by married Nazi soldiers greet them. The soldiers also convince them to get into car to be "relocated." When they get out of the car they are put into hot, overstuffed, and airless box cars.
Why aren't you girls working!
When Hannah and her family finally get out of the box cars they see a sign that says "work makes you free." when they get inside the camp they are instructed to get undressed, take ice cold showers, shave their heads, and pick out rags for cloths. After they get there heads shaved Gitl tells Hannah to never cry anymore. When that process was done they got a tattoo of a number on their arm. Hannah's was J197241 witch she is trying to remember. Then every one is put into barracks.
I was called Rivka.
After a nights sleep Hannah gets in line to get food the girl handing out the food, Rivka, tells Hannah to meet her. When they meet Rivka educates Hannah about rules like call people by their names but memorizes there numbers, don't stand next to someone who has a G in their numbers, and do not use words like death, corps, and steal. Rivka also tells her on things like organizing, musselman, the line, and the malach ha-mavis.
One day when Rivka,Hannah,Shifre, and Esther went to get water Hannah talked to them about how many Jews would die in the camps and that Jews can become famous. She also said that this was important to remember. Then a new guard caught them off task. He told them that he needed 3 more people to fill a load to be killed. He picked all the girls except Hannah. So Hannah raced to save Rivka by swapping places with her. When Hannah stepped in the oven everything disappeared.
The first thing she sees is a door and hears voices across the room. She turns around to see a bunch of people sitting at a table. She goes and takes a set next to aunt Eva witch she notices a number on Aunt Eva's arm and knows that Rivka had the same number. So she asks and Aunt Eva tells her she was called Rivka. Then Aunt Eva tells the story of what happened to all the people that Hannah knew after they got out of the camps.
