Stephen Douglass supported the idea of moving west and wanted western land to be industrialized (railroads). This required Congress to to reopen the debate on western lands (free or slavery). So, Douglass created the Kansas Nebraska Act so that the state could decide when joining the union if it would be free or not.

Pro Slavery supporters and anti-slavery supporters began to fight over whether or not Kansas should be a free state. This caused the attack from the pro slavery side in Lawrence, Kansas (the headquarters for the free state party). Which then caused the revolt let by John Brown and several other abolitionists.

Dred Scott was a slave under John Emerson and once his master died, he sued the court for his freedom. His reasoning was that prior to his masters death he lived in Illinois a free state, so he should be a free man. But the court said that since he was not technically a citizen of the United Sates they could not consider his case so he was ruled a slave.

John Brown led a revolt at Harpers Ferry where he planned to give slaves guns so that they could protect themselves against their masters and run away, to be free. He was planning on the free and run away slaves to all meet in an independent regime in the Appalachian Mountains . But his attempts to liberate these slaves failed.
In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won but not from the popular vote as he only received 40%, but from the electoral vote which was 180 to 72. This divided the North and the South even more as the Southerners knew Lincoln was an abolitionist and feared slavery could be prevented of abolished.

Within days of Lincoln being elected as president, South Carolina unanimously decided to leave the Union. They and the 6 other states leaving the Union drafted the constitution for the Confederate States of America. This closely resembled the US constitution except, it gave people the right to own slaves and declared that each state was soverieig and independent.
