Brian heard slithering noises in the shelter when he was in bed.
it's not working at all!!
Brian tried to throw the hatchet at the noise, but he missed. When he missed the hatchet hit a rock and made sparks.
The animal was a porcupine, and the quills of it went into Brian's leg because Brian kicked out his leg.
Brian learned the most important rule of survival and that was that self-pity accomplishes nothing and that you can’t feel sorry for yourself because it does not work. He knew this because he was feeling sorry for himself because of what happened with the porcupine.
Brian had a dream about Terry and his dad and the time they made a fire at the park and how the first time it did not work, but when they added charcoal it did work. His dad was trying to tell him something, but there was no sound.
Brian realized a way to start a fire by using his hatchet.
