Storyboard Text

  • Simile
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar." (Plath 1)
  • Simile
  • "The air like honey." (Plath 3)
  • Symbol
  • "She could see now that what she was sitting on a woodpile next to the furnace." (Plath 1)
  • This is the symbol.
  • This comic above show Millicent having a flashback from her high school years. She is remembering how one major event, has changed her life forever, knowing she doesn't need to be excepted by everyone she meets. This shows that at some of the most random times in life, you remember things that have impacted you. Being in her basement, takes her back to her initiation.
  • Quote
  • This simile on page 3 is when Millicent just got outside of being inside. She is comparing the air to honey, because it was sweet and comforting. The air gave an image to the reader about what she was feeling, and thinking at that moment. It helped create imagery, and give us more knowledge about the setting, and story.
  • Character~Bev
  • "Get up, gopher,' Bev ordered." pg. 5 "Into the house, gopher. There's a bed to be made and a room to be cleaned at the rep of the stairs." (Plath 5)
  • In the short story "The Initiation" I believe the fire/ furnace in the beginning and in the end of the flashback symbolizes something greater than just a fire. The fire symbolizes that it can always change the way it is blowing, the shape, and the color but you will always have the original flame. By this would be that even though Millicent changed what her outlook on exception was going to be, she was always going to have the memories of high school, and never really fitting in until after the experience with the social club.
  • Theme
  • "Hey Millicent, come on out now. This is it.' There were some of the girls outside. 'I'm coming,' she said, getting up and moving out of the soft darkness into the glare of light, thinking: This is it, all right." (Plath 9)
  • Thanks Tracy, sometimes we have to learn the hard way. Now I know life isn't about everyone exepting me, it is about me excpeting myself
  • This quote from "Initiation" is a great example of when Millicent finally realized how she doesn't need everyone to except her. She see's that random people, who she will probably never see again except her for who she is, that means people that get to know her over time should except her even if she isn't in a social club. In this quote she shared such a strong moment in such a short time with a total stranger.
  • "Millicent broke out into spontaneous laughter. Why, this was wonderful, the way she felt a sudden comradeship with a stranger." (Plath 8)
  • These two quotes from "Initiation" show who Bev really is, which would be a cold- heart person who likes abusing her power knowing that she thinks everyone is beneath her. With calling someone names such as "gopher" really isn't what a kind person would want to do let alone make other people do her chores, just so that person can become part of a social club.
  • Above is a cartoon of Millicent talking with her best friend Tracy who wasn't excepted into the social club and another close friend. Millicent explains the theme, which is just except yourself and you will always be excepted. Life isn't about being in the "cool club" it's about having true friends by your side no matter what. Also, you always need to make sure you, yourself, is always by your side no matter how bad you want to be somewhere else/ or with anyone else. The quote is moments before Tracy makes final decision and has a serious conversation with Tracy. She knows what she's going to tell the social club, and she is okay with letting them down and following her heart.
  • Same, I always knew you were my best friend and I knew you would come around. We all go through stages where we think being popular is the key to life.
