  • The cause of the Peloponnesian War
  • The First Move
  • Athens in trouble
  • The Peloponnesian War started because Athens became powerful and wealthy and their empire grew. Sparta increased in jealously and distrust towards Athens because they were in a 30 year peace treaty. In 431 BC Sparta declared war.
  • Sparta's Come Back
  • Spartans dominated the land and Athenians dominated the sea. The Athenians decided to build a long wall all the way from its city to its seaport.
  • Athen's Weakest Point
  • Since the Athens built that wall, they had access to all trade and supplies from their ships. The downside of this choice was many people died in Athens due to plague. This war lasted 10 years.
  • The Defeat
  • Spartans had a good idea, they gathered allies to conquer Athens. They got help from Persians who lent them money to build a fleet of warships. Athens recovered and won a series of battles between 410 and 406 BC.
  • During 405 BC the Spartan general defeated the Athenian fleet in battle. The people of Athens started to starve. There was no more army, they had no chance to have a come back.
  • 404 BC, was the big day. Athens surrendered to the Spartans. Corinth and Thebes wanted Athens to be enslaved and destroyed. But surprisingly, Spartans disagreed with Corinth and Thebes. Sparta decided that Athen's walls would be destroyed. But NO ONE was enslaved or died.
