Deaf people weren't accepted by society since they couldn't communicate orally.
This can be how we cay confused.
Mason Fitch Cogswell (a professor) had a deaf daughter and he wanted her to learn sign language but was scared to send her to Braidwood so he got Thomas Gallaudet to teach her sign language.
He sent Thomas to England to ask Braidwood if they would help build a sign language school in America but they said no. So he went to France and they said yes!
They know ASL too?
In France he met Laurent Clerc and they made American Sign Language together on a 51 day long boat ride which is why ASL is similar to French Sign Language.
When they arrived at America Gallaudet and Clerc made the first school for ASL in America with the help of Cogswell. They both helped teach and named the school, which was made on April 15, 1817, The American Asylum for the Instruction of the Deaf.
I'm so excited for the school to open!
Now there is a strong deaf community and they are (mostly) accepted by society.
