  • July 4,1776......Thomas Jefferson has just finished the Declaration of Independence which is the colonies way of declaring independence from Great Britian.
  • Thank you, now lets get all of our men to sign it.
  • Declaration of Independence
  • Thomas, this document will show that we truly want to have sovereignty or be a self governing state.
  • A year later in 1777, The Articles of Confederation was the first form of government that was adopted by the Continental Congress. It was a very weak and was very flawed.
  • This new government form will help us become an independent nation.
  • It also is nothing like Britain's rule over us so the central government will not rule over us harshly.
  • May 25, 1787... The first Constitutional Convention was where delegates, people sent from their colonies to represent those colonies, met to revise the Articles of Confederation, but they decided to start a brand new document. These meetings were all held in secret and all of the colonies sent delegates except for Georgia.
