Storyboard Text

  • Claire the Chlorine is on an adventure to find out more about Chemical Bonding.
  • Claire has 7 valence electrons, and is apart of the Florine Family.
  • Claire is going to ask her Science Teacher more about Chemical Bonding!
  • Teacher: An ion is an atom or group of atoms that has an electric charge. They form when an atom loses an electron, it loses a negative charge and becomes a positive ion. When an atom gains an electron, it gains a negative charge and becomes a negative ion.
  • What is an ion?
  • Mother: Your project sounds great! I can tell you a little bit of info! To gain an electron an atom has to have a space open for that electron. The goal is to get 8 to become more stable!
  • Claire returned home and told her mom about what she was doing and she asked her if she knew anything.
  • Claire felt lonely, like she was missing something, She met a guy named Larry the Lithium and when they were together they felt more stable.
  • Together they form an ionic compound. When they are together, they form LiCl
  • Claire met her best friend Charles the Chlorine. Their close bond as friend formed a covenant bond, where two atoms share electrons. This normally forms between two nonmetals. They form salt, or NaCl
  • Claire and Charles have been friends since they were very young. Covalent Bonds form when pairs of electrons are shared by atoms. Atoms will covalently bond with other atoms to get more stable.
