This mother, daughter, and son left Italy to move to South Carolina.
"We are going to move and have a better life."
This Italian family was hoping to prosper economically. Little did they know this was far from what would happen.
When this family arrived in South Carolina, they were too poor to move away from where ley landed. This resulted in them staying in the port cities along with many other immigrants.
Mom, can we go somewhere else? These streets are so crowded!
Once the family arrived, not only did they suffer from financial problems, but they also had to face nativism. Nativism was a dislike of people not from South Carolina.
Why are they saying such mean things?
As a way to keep immigrants from voting, people had to take a literacy test. These tests were taken prior to voting. The immigrants had to read the US Constitution and then interpret what they had read.Women could not vote at the time, so this mother watched as many people were greatly disappointed.
Eventually, people came to a realization of all the wonderful things the immigrants brought to South Carolina.
