"She went up into (Shamash's) gateway, plaintively she implored...'Enkidu has no father or mother, his shaggy hair no one cuts. He was born in the wilderness, no one raised him (9-10).'" Gilgamesh's mother reveals Enkidu's background to Gilgamesh.
"Enkidu was standing there, and he heard the speech. He... and sat down and wept, his eyes filled with tears... (10)" When Gilgamesh's mother tells him about Enkidu, Enkidu kneels down and weeps, perhaps out of shame or sorrow for his own upbringing.
"They took each other by the hand.... Enkidu made a declaration to Gilgamesh (10)." After this scene plays out, Gilgamesh and Enkidu bond and seem to form an instant trust for each other. This is an important moment in their relationship's evolution, as it shows that they are now understanding of one another despite their different backgrounds and status.
