Franklin Pierce became president. He created the Kansas-Nebraska act that overturned the Missouri Compromise, this allowed popular sovereignty in the state, which meant the people voted to have slavery or not.
People from different states went to Kansas to vote for what they believed was right and wanted to hold a peaceful protest
This peaceful protest soon turned bloody and John Brown who believed was chosen by God to end slavery and free African Americans killed slave owners in Harpers Ferry.
He expected slaves in the plantation to revolt with him but they didn't. He and his men were left to fight on their own. John Brown killed four people until the military stopped him and captured him and his men.
