  • The giver is explaining to Jonas that the teachers don't really know anything because without the memories there is no meaning to anything. (pg. 133)
  • Oh, your instructors are well trained. They know their scientific facts. Everyone is well trained for their job. It's just that without the memories it's all meaning-less.
  • Jonas just recieved the memory of love. He is pondering the concept of how families used to work and live each other. (pg. 157)
  • It seems to work petty well that way, doesn't it? The way we do it in our community? I just didn't know there was another way until I received that memory.
  • It works.
  • Jonas asked his parents if they loved him and they responded as though that word had no meaning. They said that it was a general word. (pg. 159)
  • Do you love me?
  • Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language!
  • In this scene Jonas' father is preforming a release. (pg. 186/187)
  • Jonas has just seen what a releases it and is beyond grief. He is very upset and doesn't understand how they can do that. (pg. 191)

  • Listen to me, Jonas. They can't help it. They know nothing.
  • Jonas is trying to persuade the Giver to come with him, but the Giver refused. (pg. 196)
