Three children named Salty, Gale and Hobby enter and express their happiness over school ending. They tell the audience of a previous drama teacher and offer to re-enact a real life story just by themselves.
Mr Nixon the new drama teacher arrives at Mrs Parrys office. Here she proceeds to tell him about the new production of Mikado she wants him to star in. He politely refuses the lead. He is informed of the rather complex time table.
Mr Nixon is introduced to his class and is initially ridiculed by his students. Soon however the children grow on him and he realises their raw potential. He encounters Ms prime who he becomes infatuated with. She warns him not to go behind the Sports hall
Mr Nixon confronts Oggy Moxon. He is smoking and is in possession of inappropriate magazines. A large crowd gathers and he realises he is unable to deal with Oggy. He is ridiculed once again.
Mr Badford confronts Mr Nixon about troubling Doug (caretaker). Mr Nixon questions why the children at Whitehall don't have the same opportunities that the children, including Mr Basfords sons, at St Georges do even though they deserve it just as much.
Ms Whitham tells Mr Nixon of a great opportunity to work at St Georges. He considers it especially after the terrible time he is having at Whitham.
