The father knew very well that the mother was not coming back, but didn't want to admit it to himself or the kids.
Is mama going to come back?
I don't know...
It is roughly 6 years later. The older sister, Delilah, has been forced on take on the parent role for her younger siblings because her mother never came back and her father became both depressed and aggressive.
I'm going to go see if we have any food.
I'm hungry too, bring me back something please!
After searching through the fridge and all of the cabinets, she was not able to find any real food.
Nothing to eat, nothing new.
Daaaad!! We still have nothing to eat and I need to feed myself and the little ones!
Not wanting to nor caring to leave his room, her father yells from across the house in response.
I shouldn't have to be the parent! They're my siblings, not my children!
I'm about to be out of highschool! I can't spend my whole young adult life taking care of them!
Dang it Delilah, I don't care! Cook something! You can figure it out!
Upset and unsure about what to do, she goes back to her room to think.
If I leave for college soon, the little ones will have to basically fend for themselves, and they're too young for that. It wouldn't be fair to them.
If only mom was still here.
But it's not fair to me! I want to do something with my life.
